The main alloying element of stainless steel is chromium (Cr) (typically ≥10.5%), supplemented by other elements (e.g., nickel, molybdenum, manganese) to achieve different properties. Below are typical classifications and composition examples:
Cr: 16–20%
Ni: 8–12% (enhances corrosion resistance and formability)
C: ≤0.08% (low-carbon types like 304L contain C ≤0.03%)
Mo: 2–3% (e.g., 316 contains Mo for improved pitting resistance)
Mn, Si: Trace amounts (improves processability).
Cr: 16–18% (e.g., 430)
C: ≤0.12% (low carbon)
Ni: Generally absent (cost-effective)
Mo: Some grades contain it (e.g., 444 contains 1.75–2.5% Mo).
Cr: 11.5–18%
C: 0.15–1.2% (high carbon for increased hardness)
Ni: Trace or none.
Cr: 21–23%
Ni: 4.5–6.5%
Mo: 2.5–3.5%
N: 0.1–0.3% (improves strength and corrosion resistance).
Mechanical properties depend on processing conditions (annealed, cold-rolled, etc.) and heat treatment. Common ranges are as follows:
Tensile Strength (Rm): 500–700 MPa
Yield Strength (Rp0.2): 200–300 MPa
Elongation (A): 40–60%
Hardness: 150–200 HV (Brinell Hardness).
Tensile Strength: 450–600 MPa
Yield Strength: 250–400 MPa
Elongation: 20–30%
Hardness: 160–220 HV.
Tensile Strength: 700–2000 MPa (increases with carbon content)
Yield Strength: 550–1800 MPa
Elongation: 5–15%
Hardness: 35–60 HRC.
